With the cost of child care rising by 25% over the past decade, countless low- and middle-income families face impossible choices: their ability to work, pursue education, or balance careers and family life is severely limited when child care expenses compete with essential living costs, such as housing and transportation. On average, 15% of a two-income household’s earnings go toward child care, and in single-income households, that burden soars to 36%—for a single parent on minimum wage, that’s approximately $450 per month. These financial challenges place a significant strain on parents who are already working hard to provide for their children.
